A Siberian cat is known for its extraordinary, but rather exemplary appearance of a domestic Russian cat. Where did this breed come from, what are its features of appearance, character and health?
History of the origin of the breed
There are many rumors and myths around the origin of the Siberian cat. According to some sources, Siberian cats appeared in the Siberian taiga, due to which they have some features of their appearance that helped them survive in difficult climatic conditions.
Siberian cat refers to an aboriginal long-haired breed and owes its features (appearance, character and endurance) to nature. It is believed that the ancestors of this cat were wild steppe (forest), Siberian cats are predators, which are excellent hunters.
Siberian cat breed were determined not so long ago – in the early 90’s. Breeders identified special features how to determine the breed. They studied what a Siberian cat should be, and gave a detailed description: what looks like, what are the characteristic features, what is the nature and what are the other features.
Description of the Siberian cat breed
Siberian cat differs from other of its relatives in a stocky physique, muzzle, fluffy hair, character, physiology …. Let’s consider the main characteristics of the Russian Siberian breed of cats in more detail.
Breed Standard (appearance):
The first thing a Siberian cat differs from others is its size and weight. A powerful, stocky body with a rather developed musculature makes these cats magnificent. Muscular mass of Siberian kittens is formed long enough, as humans, to 3 years.
The front paws are slightly shorter than the hind legs, which makes the spine slightly sloping (this gives strength and dexterity to the animal). The average weight of an adult Siberian female cat is 6 kilograms, a male cat is 12 kilograms.
The “Siberians” have large, muscular paws that distinguish them from other cats by the fact that there are long enough bundles of wool between their fingers.
The long wool of the Siberian kitten is hypoallergenic, which makes this cat an indispensable pet for allergy sufferers. The wool of cats of this breed consists of 2 layers: very thick undercoat and hard wool, which practically does not get wet. Cats feel comfortable in all weather conditions and temperatures thanks to this “woolen cover”.
The head of the cat of this breed is quite large, round in shape, and the neck is short, but strong. The muzzle has a trapezoid shape. The brushes can be seen on the ears that were inherited from the ancestors.
The eyes are oval in shape, they are medium in size and slightly slanting.
The color of the Siberian cat can be completely different, as evidenced by the pictures (photo), which you will see below.
Character and some features
The origin of the cat is noticed. A Siberian cat is an excellent hunter. The instinct of the hunter is developed so that it does not disappear under any “extreme” conditions. She will catch not only the mouse but also the rabbit with dexterity.
The same instinct of a hunter makes a cat look like a dog. She brings things in her teeth (with joy). You will know how to name and pick up a name for a kitten, a selection of beautiful nicknames based on these data.
Fearlessness. “Siberians” protect their space, do not let extraneous animals and people in, informing the owners that “strangers” have come. They are absolutely not afraid of dogs, people, and what scares ordinary cats (harsh noise, car hum, sirens …).
Learning. A Siberian cat is smart and obedient. It can be accustomed to a certain place for the toilet. Mind, discretion. A cat will never climb anywhere, without making sure it’s safe. Before you get the toy from under the chair (cabinet, bed), she will think carefully about how to do it.
Siberian cats are not fastidious. These cats will play with any object (toy, piece of paper, thread …), which they will be offered.
Passion for height. Do not be surprised to see a cat on the fridge, cupboard or high on the tree, as this is quite normal for them. They prefer restraint in relation to people. Siberian cats are affectionate, but restrained.
They will not always ask for help, but they will never leave their master when they are ill (they get sick, upset something). They will not adjust to their owners, because they consider themselves so. Siberian cats will be friends with the owners only if they respect them.
Health and immunity is much stronger than their brethrens. Life expectancy is 15-20 years.
Offspring. Siberian cats can give offspring in 5-9 (rarely) kittens. The reproductive age of the female cat can last up to 18 years, the male cat – only up to 11.
Care and maintenance
- Siberian cats can care for the fur on their own, so their owners only occasionally need to comb them: during moulting (about 10 days) and constantly (1-2 times A month is enough).
- If we talk about nutrition, then it is not difficult to feed these cats. The fact is that this breed has a genetically laid program for a natural and diverse food, which facilitates the choice of feed and food for them. There is only one feature that is important to consider while feeding Siberian breeds , this feature is amount of proteins (during growth). Given the fact that the musculature of the kitten is formed by 3 years, its nutrition should be predominantly protein (about 70%) in these years.
- Do not forget about their love to freedom and liberate them periodically.

Conclusions about the breed
The Siberian soul is hidden in the powerful body of a Siberian cat. The benevolent and open being preserved many of the habits of his ancestors – love of hunting and natural observance. The intelligence of these cats is legendary – Siberians do not need to be taught stunts and miracles of dressing, they do it by themselves. They begin to understand what people want from them, watching them.
A Siberian cat is a wonderful companion, able to maintain self-esteem. They have a very developed sense of home and Siberians are close to dogs for this quality. Fearlessness is also their trait. The Siberian cat will be amused by what scares an ordinary cat. Siberian cats are silent and you will not hear unnecessary sounds from them.
