History of the breed origin

The birthplace of the savanna breed cat is America. In the eighties of the last century, there were a lot of nurseries and farms for breeding serval, mini-mines of the African region. Jutey Frank, the owner of the cat’s farm, asked Susie Wood for her cat, Emie. Emie favorably was accepted not only by farm cats, but also domestic cat of Jutey Frank.

Probably, this nameless Siamese beauty should be considered the mother-founder of the breed, since it was she who gave birth to the charming cat on April 7. The kitten of the savannah weighed 8 ounces (227 grams), was a predatory spotted color, long-legged and large-eared.

Savannah cat history

In gratitude for the services, the newborn was presented to Susie Wood, who remembered that outwardly the baby resembled a daddy-serval, “and from the Siamese cat (mother) inherited the talkativeness.” Actually  this hybrid (F1) was called Savannah.

Three years later, Savannah gave birth to several kittens from Angora’s luxurious Albert 11. They were kittens of the second generation of savannah F2. Susie Wood decided to declare a new breed to the world and published a couple of articles about her savannahs. Patrick Kelly, interested in the breed, did not warn about his plans the hostess of Savannah F1, bought a kitten and began to improve the breed, along with a fine breeder Joyce Srouf.

Already in 1996, the Board of Directors of the International Cat Association introduced the First Standard for the Cat of Savannah Breed.

Chronicle of the breed will be incomplete yet without one name – Simon Brody. This is a fraudster who, using the rarities of savannahs, arranged a scam of Ashera (Ashera). Simon said that Savannah F1 was a new breed. Be careful, the fictitious breed is trying to be sold from time to time, and Simon Brody is hiding from justice.

Description of the Savannah breed

According to one version, the cats of the savanna breed were taken out because what the savanna looks like is suitable for describing a small cheetah. By the way, the keepers and breeders hoped that the existence of a new breed would help to avoid the keeping of real wild animals in the cages and replace the latter among amateurs of exotics.

Indeed, the cheetah color and wild grace are characteristic features of the savannah. The breed standard specifies distinctive features.

1. The head of the representatives of the breed is elegant and small (relatively to the body), and resembles an equilateral triangle by its shape, in which the ears are not included. The vibrous pads are almost invisible;

  • The ears are large, high-ranking, the tips of the ears are rounded. At the base of the ears are wide enough that there is a minimum distance between them. If a “wild spot” is observed on the outside of the ears, these two light colored differences confirm the thorough-bredness of the pet;
  • How to determine a real savannah? You can do that even by the shape of the eyes – it is completely unique. The upper line of the eyes is in the form of a boomerang, and the lower one as an amygdale. The distance between the eyes is equal to the size of the eyes. Eyes can be yellow, copper or green – it does not depend on the color of the animal;
  • Nose is wide, lobe is slightly convex. The nose lobe is red, ginger, and black with a pink or red line in the center. The black savanna also has a black nose.

2. The kitten of the savanna breed becomes a full-fledged cat only by the 3rd year. The size of an adult savanna is amazing – weighs up to 14 kg, almost half a meter growth at the withers! And feedback from owners about the appearance of their favorite “kids” confirms that the general appearance of even the smallest representatives of the breed makes an impression due to the lanky body of savannas:

  • Athletic body (semi-inflexible physique), powerful chest, shoulders and hips are strong;
  • The limbs are very long and slender. There is no excess fat on the legs of savannas, but there is well-defined musculature. The front legs are noticeably shorter than the hind legs. “Highness” is deceptive – it creates the impression of a “cow” position (proximity of knee joints).Paws are not large but, oval. Pads’ color is exclusively coal or brown-coal color!
  • The tail of the savanna breed cat is so long that in the standing position of the animal the tail does not touch the floor. The thickness of the tail is medium, tapering to the tip. By standard, tail color is always bright and contrasting.

3. The fur of the savannah, of course, differs from the usual cat’s fur. It is rude and more resilient. In this case, the thickness of the fur impresses – the undercoat is soft, but dense and coarse fur covers it. The density of the fur is the same throughout the body.

Famous cheetah stains come in different sizes and are scattered throughout the body chaotically. But the color of the spots is uniform – they are either brown or black.

The color of savannah fur can be:

  • tabby cinnamon
  • chocolate
  • golden
  • brown
  • silvery

Specialists note that the color and pattern on the fur depends on the genes of the domestic cat, taken for crossbreeding.

Not only white medallions on the chest, spots of not brown or not black colors and tiger coloring are disqualification signs for this breed.

IMPORTANT! The first generation from crossing with the serval is labeled as F1 (50% of the serval’s blood).

F1 + domestic cat = F2 (25% of the serval’s blood) and so on until the F5 generation. With the increase in marking, the uniqueness of the breed decreases and the answer to the question “How much does a cat of the savannah breed” is no longer so shocking. The most valuable, of course, from this point of view are breeds of generation F1 and F2. Male offspring up to the 4th generation is barren.

The nature of the Savannah cats

Savannahs are cats that can be trained. And this is not trivial: “Murka, go eat!”, But quite serious commands, such as: “Aport!” Or “Alien!” Yes, savannah must be intelligent, inventive and affectionate. But with the last point there are blunders, especially in F1 generation.

If the kitten of the savanna F1 breed is initially affectionate, nice and good-natured, then there is still the possibility that in three years (to the final formation of personality) these qualities will be altered to a wild character.

Savannah cat nature

Therefore, F1 is recommended to keep in the yard, in a special aviary. However, perhaps actually your pet will be a pleasant exception.

These cats are curious, very sociable. In the presence of other animals in the house, the cat savanna instantly forms its “flock”, in which it takes the place of the leader. By the way, savannas have a special disposition towards dogs, apparently because of the general nature of the characters.

Savannah is rare because an artificially bred breed does not have genetic diseases. Many people associate this with the strong heredity of the wild serval. Timely vaccination and deworming is a pledge of good health of your pet.

Life expectancy of the savannah is 17-20 years.

Care for savannah cats

You will need to look after an exotic beauty or a handsome cat but not the same as for ordinary cats. Savannah cats do not like the cold, but they love water. Allow them to swim in the pool or in the nearest pond.

They prefer to occupy the “upper” floors in the room – remove everything that you feel sorry for seeing broken. In this case, keep in mind that savanna jumps to 3 meters in height with ease of an athlete-Olympian.

Savannah cat health

Also, for the sake of the safety of the pet, it is necessary to remove from its field of vision and reach such common domestic plants as: spurge, violet, diffenbachia, monstera, philodendron and other poisonous plants.

Long walks are recommended, which can be replaced by keeping the most expensive cat of the world in a country house.

A weekly combing is enough to keep the fur in good look.

What to feed the cat savannah? It is easier to answer the question – what not to feed them. Do not give food with high grain content to your cheetah pet – their digestive system does not digest the grain. Also, do not give milk and sour-milk products – their presence in the menu can lead to a digestive system disorder.

Savannah cat feeding

Savannahs are predators, and it’s not worth trying to give them fish, but offal, such as hearts, ventricles and so forth will be liked by the animal. It is also recommended to give chicken mince.

If you plan to save yourself from the daily calculation of calories and the balance of nutrition, then give preference to dry food exclusively to super premium segment.

Savannah cat price

Created by breeder Joyce Srowf cattery of breeds of savannah breed “A1 SAVANNAHS” is considered the best gene pool of the breed today. In general, the Savannah cat in the power of youth generates a huge demand – cats are rare and expensive. More precisely, the most expensive of hundreds of existing breeds. The price directly depends on the marking (class).

The first generation of F1 – the most expensive, they can cost and 5000$. Other F cheaper. Moreover, males, due to the fact that before the 4th generation they are infertile, are cheaper than females.

The average price is $ 5000-7500 dollars.
