The history of the origin of the breed

It appeared by crossing method of an ordinary domestic cat with a wild leopard. Homeland of Bengal cats is America, where it has been bred in 1963.

The combination turned out quite impressive, it would be very similar to wild cats, but referring to the size it is not. Everyone who lives in the house, where there is so-called wildlife, is delighted not only by its unusual color, but also by the temperament of Bengal cat.

Description of Bengal cat

Home Bengal cat is rather large. A grown cat weighs about 7-8 kilograms.

Features of this breed are very visible. They resemble the wild cats, that are independent and capable for “feats”. However, appearance can be deceiving however Bengal cat just seems to be so.

You cannot pinpoint the character according to its appearance. Bengal kittens inherited from their wild ancestor only 15-20% of the genes, the other features of appearance and character were obtained from a domestic cat.

These “wild” genes do not make an aggressive cat, but only introduced such special signs in her life as:

  • Graceful and plasticity which are peculiar to predators;
  • Unusual color;
  • The water love.

To answer the question of how to determine the Bengal cat and differentiate with others, let us turn to its standard.

The breed standard (appearance)

A description of all the external features which are inherent to “Bengals” is a breed standard (features).

  • The head of “Bengal” has a wedge shape, which makes the “landing” of his ears a little peculiar. Special distinctions are a massive chin and thickened whiskers, making the cat’s mouth “tiger” (a square shape). This can be seen when a cat yawning, meows or roars.
  • Ears are short, highly positioned, have a broad base and slightly rounded tips.
  • The nose is bent, big and wide.
  • Chubby cheeks are with large balls under whiskers.
  • Eyes (almond shaped) are unusually beautiful green or golden color.
  • The neck is thick, massive, muscular and proportional to the head and body.
  • The body is large, strong and muscular.
  • Paws are round, powerful and large. Hind feet are longer than front ones.
  • The tail is of medium size, compact and not fluffy. Spots or rings should be presented on the entire length of the tail. The fur is medium or short, thick in texture, very soft (like silk) when touch.
  • Color is spotted tabby (leopard or marble). There maybe a few shades (gray, white and red). Spots should be distributed evenly over the cat’s body (you can see pictures below).

The nature and some features

Home Bengal cat is a lovely creature, similar to the picture (can “freeze” in a beautiful posture and sit thoughtfully for a long time), in need of affection and constant attention. “Bengals” are very playful and curious, but smart and do not stick the nose where it is dangerous.

It is believed that these cats are aggressive, but it is not so. As we have noted in their genes only about 20% is the “Wild Blood”, they have inherited the remaining 80% from the home, quiet and gentle cats.

Bengal cat are attached to the people even more than to home. Having attached to “mom” (“daddy”), they will be missing every moment of separation.
These cats are incredibly committed, ready to accompany its master everywhere: on the couch, in bed, in the kitchen, in the bathroom … They are like a dog, will pursue the master everywhere, running behind him.

“Bengals” love the water and can take a bath with the owner (with great pleasure).

The life expectancy of this breed is 12-15 years (and more).

Tip: Do not keep a cat of this breed, if you’re constantly being absent at home.

No need to complicate the cat’s life, depriving the attention and making it unhappy. Insufficient attention to the Bengal cat makes her wild and incredulous.

Keeping and care

Care for the Bengal cat is a pleasure. They love to swim, behave decently (not tearing the wallpaper and bite armrests), feed them is as easy as anyone else. No special care is needed, just standard: immunizations, periodic grooming, attention and affection.

They are accustomed to the toilet without any problems, but love to dig their “waste”. Keep this in mind, purchase them deep indoor toilet and do not forget to strew the sand inside (a mixture of cat litter).

These cats get along well with other pets, finding a common language with them and love children.

It is recommended to find a suitable candidate for breeding these cats; it is not worth to experiment.

You see the Bengal cats of various colors on the photo.

  • Leopard cat, it is often called “leopardetta”, the most popular of the “Bengal”. It is very similar to their wild descendants.

  • “Sorrel” (golden color with chocolate brown spots). Cats with such color have usually black tail tip. It is interesting that their true color is formed by the year (half-year); it is difficult to determine the value of a kitten younger than that age.

  • Marble Bengal cat differs from the others by completely different spots; they have a kind of (not leopard) form.

  • “Snow Leopard” (white, gray). Dark spots are visible on the gray-white background. Interestingly, kittens are born completely white, later they acquire a grayish tinge and dark specks.
